Planning to visit the Key River Area of Georgian Bay some time this summer. I have not been on this web-page much the last couple of years due to other interests such as wildlife photography. Than you for your interest in this web-page. I have never placed any ads on this web-page for pay but WordPress has to offset their cost of running the blog page. I could say & write much more about The Key River Area of Georgian Bay but half the fun of wilderness camping & fishing is discovering for yourself the many marvels of the great outdoors. The Georgian Bay is big & there are many places you can explore & lots of wildlife to excite. If my blog page got you there it has served it;s purpose. Talk to the old timers who camped there in 1930 to 1950 & hear their stories of the great yellow pickerel runs, the huge pike & muskie. The fur traders who used canoes to move their goods across country. The fishing & canning industry worked this area for many years. You will see the remains of their businesses. Hope to see you there soon.
If you want to see some really nice fish taken this year in this area go to their new website. There are also very nice photographs of the area taken by professional photographers.
Diamond Key Lodge
This is Ivan the native person that was so kind & nice to us when we camped out in The Key River Area Of The Georgian Bay.
He told us to follow him when he took out fishing parties for Key Harbour Lodge & he would show us where all the good spots were.
He always used & red & white Daredevil ( middle sized one ) & 20 pound line.
As I recall Ivan would sometimes put his head on top of the boat motor & sleep while his party was catching one fish after another in the same spot.
Ivan knew this area better than anyone & could take you places way back in very few knew about.
He knew where to find big yellow pickerel that would get stranded in deep holes when the spring flow subsided & he would take people there to catch them on night crawlers.
He knew where really big largemouth were & in fact had customers catch them on night crawlers back in the area of the bass hole.
Al Lytle also knew about surface lure fishing for largemouth back there as I can recall him taking his young son back to fish for largemouth one year after we told him they were hitting on the surface.
Ivan went way back in one day & never came out & I heard it took them three days to find his body where he had passed away.
They finally found his boat but had no idea where he had gone inland on this particular island.
Ivan knew all the islands all the way out to the Bad River & beyond.
He was trully a legend to me , countless other fishermen & outdoorsmen who were blessed to have crossed his path.
Some people say there are no cougars or mountain lions in The Key River area of Georgian Bay.
Back around 1989 I saw a light brown cat from a distance walking around the shore of a bay back in The lower Pickerel River.
He booked when we got close because of the noise our boat motor made which is par for the course up there.
We pulled over & got out of our boat & checked out the tracks which were much larger than that of the native cats the bobcat or lynx.
The scats in the area were also large.
When I told the wildlife officer about what I had seen he asked a simple question.
Did this cat have a long tail?
I said yes it was as long as the cat’s body.
The wildlife officer concluded that we had seen a cougar or mountain lion that had traveled to this area from out west or escaped from a private owner.
We never saw the cat again or it’s large tracks so it was probably on the move when we ran across it.
This makes for interesting conversation as many other species could at times migrate from far off distances to Georgian Bay to find food.
Here where I live in Ohio we now have coyotes & black bears that have migrated here from southern or eastern states to take advantage of the large deer population.
Cougars & other cats have also been spotted here from time to time.
The moral of this story is simple.
There could be mountain lions or grizzly bears in the Key River area of Georgian Bay that may have migrated there from way out west.
I saw cougars up around Wawa when I went up there to checkout all the gold mines & prospectors which was really an interesting & intriguing experience.
The cougars I saw up there also had tails as long as their bodies which was proof enough as no native or local cats have long tails period.
The mining operations up there basically consisted of a couple of guys with air compressors, jack hammers, bobcat loaders & small pickup trucks with dump beds or small dump trucks.
They told me they had to put the earth back the way they found it after they hauled the ore to a processing plant where the gold was extracted & the rest put back on their truck to fill in the trenches they made with their jack hammers.
Most of them had tents setup right on their claims & they camped, lived & worked right off the site.
The nearest town for supplies & provisions was Dubreuilville, Ontario in the Algoma District 70 kilometers away & this was also the nearest medical facility.
Was there any money in this?
One guy told me often times they would file a claim, work it & spend $45,000.00 & come out empty handed.
He said they hit one for three & one half million dollars three years before but that was more of an exception than the rule.
If you ever get a chance to drive up there checkout the gold mining operations & STOP & TALK TO THEM.
They seem to enjoy having someone to chat with being out there year after year cut-off from civilization.
They told me they had to actually work a claim within so many days of filing it or they would lose it.
Yes. the gold rush is on in Northern Ontario yet few people seem to be aware of that.
I stumbled across it by accident & glad I did.
I saw many moose, wolves & bears up in that area & most were right on or near the roads which made for an exciting time & adventure.
I spent 14 days up there & was never bored for one minute.
I pulled into one town way out in the middle of no-where & you drive from the bush right into a city like any other city.
People watering lawns, walking around town shopping, a post office, a few eating places & all that.
It was like entering another world all of a sudden.
They had one large factory there that made plywood out of wood chips & most of the people who lived there worked in this plant or the lumbering operations that supplied the trees to be chipped & glued together to make the plywood in four by eight foot sheets for new construction.
What was weird is you drive out of the city limits & nothing but bush for eighty kilometers.
I drove there to buy a white gas stove as the one I had blew-up on me.
No one had one there for sale so I drove 400 kilometers back to Sault Saint Marie where I found a Coleman two burner at Walmart.
Do yourself a favor & always take two stoves with you & an extra camera just in case.
Mountain lions are very sneaky predators & feared by people who live in their roaming areas as every so often they grab a runner or jogger for a quick & easy meal.
No human being is a match for an angry cougar let alone a grizzly bear or black bear.
No guns allowed is the real problem as without one you could end up on their dinner table as the main course.
What a way to go.
They say there are no grizzly bears or cougars in the Key River area of the Georgian Bay or that is what they believe.
Always remember just because you believe something to be true & correct does not necessarily mean it is.
No human being on earth has ever been able to be right as much as 51% of the time.
With that ability you could own the world & everything in it just playing around with the stock market & various other investments in your spare time.
If you see a cougar up there report it to wildlife officials.
If you see a grizzly bear run like hell to the nearest tree & don’t come down until it’s gone & then pack-up & leave as soon as possible.
They say grizzlies can not climb trees after they get really big & then I see this show on tv & this thousand pound grizzly bear is climbing up & down trees looking for bird eggs?
They told me that cottonmouths in Florida do not climb trees or hang out in tree limbs hanging over the water so there is no chance one could slip into your canoe & then I go to Snake Road in southern Illinois & I see a hundred cottonmouths of all sizes climbing trees & hanging in tree branches. Google snake road & ask for videos if you like venomous snakes such as copperheads, cottonmouths & timber rattlesnakes. These snakes make a migration across snake road in the spring & fall every year & they close the road to vehicle traffic so people will not run over them. You can get out of your car & walk snake road at these times & you will see many of these snakes either heading back to La Rue swamp or the limestone cliffs where they winter in their dens. There is no other place like this in America. It is located in The Shawnee National Forest.
I used to think I knew everything when I was young.
I had nothing to say but I sure knew how to say it.
The Boy Scouts had a wise old saying that is just as applicable today: Be Prepared!
In the wilderness almost anything can turn up anywhere at any time.
It may be a million to one long shot but you just never know.
Your next cast could land you in the record books or get you another dogfish to figure out how to get back in the water without getting your fingers bit off.
Human beings are powerless over mother nature & what goes on in the wilderness.
That much I know for sure.
If you have ever tried to make or get a fish to bite when they have no desire or inclination to do so you know what I mean.
That is why the native people used nets & spears to get them on their dinner table.
I had to go to the US Post Office to pickup a form to fill out. The form is to obtain a border crossing pass which is only good for Canada, Mexico & Some islands in The Caribbean & good only if you are driving or going by ship.
To fly to any of these places you have to buy a passport.
I had to go to a photo shop & have two 2 inch by 2 inch passport photos made & that cost about $12.00.
I had to get an original copy of my birth certificate & it had to have an original seal on it.
That cost me $10.00
I gave the Post Office $75.00 for the passport fee & then they said they also needed another $25.00 for their fee.
The total cost was $122.00 & all the gas & hassle running around or sending off for this or that.
I also had to have a valid photo ID such as my Ohio drivers license which made me wonder why I needed a passport as the driver’s license is basically the same thing (positive ID). All a passport or border crossing pass is is positive ID.
They also have the border crossing pass & the only difference is the fee is $45.00 instead of $75.00.
They told me I would get my passport in the mail within 4 to 6 weeks along with my birth certificate that went with the application.
This whole thing came about in response to terrorism that happened way back in 911 in New York City & Washington DC.
What is really strange is thousands of miles of the Canadian border is basically unguarded & unprotected & anyone could just walk or sneak across at many different places along the way.
There are 15 to 20 million illegal immigrants in the US to prove my point so what good are these border passes or passports doing if people can just walk across borders from Mexico or Canada.
I am retired & on limited income & went to Canada & back twice a year for over 35 years & all I had to do was answer a few questions & was free to come & go as I pleased.
I supported businesses where I went fishing by purchasing services & goods. I helped their economy & I also helped the US economy by purchasing boats, motors, fishing tackle & all that just for my trips to Canada each year.
Everyone has a right to their own opinion by they do not have a right to be wrong in their facts.
In my opinion this border pass thing is a total waste of time & violates my right as a US citizen to come & go freely as I please & had done for many years. I also feel that it is unfair to businesses in Canada who rely on Americans coming up each year to fish or hunt. I feel that it will not stop or prevent any terrorist from entering the US as no one really knows who is or is not a terrorist & especially so when our government is not allowed to suspect people because of their race, creed or religion (racial profiling) which is also stupid in so much as they are trying to specifically stop terrorist from the middle east or now Africa. The government building in Oklahoma was blown up by a former US Marine & this guy was an American. There is no way to stop terrorism & especially not when suicide is involved. Anyone can get on the inter-net & get instructions on how to make bombs out of ordinary household products or fertilizers or other readily available chemicals. All one really needs is empty soda bottles filled with gasoline, a rag & a Bic lighter & they have an effective weapon of destruction. How can any government or government agency stop this type of activity by terrorist short of locking up all people in American that are from the Middle East or Africa?
With that in mind how is a border crossing pass or a passport going to stop a terrorist?
Do they really think these people are so stupid they will try to cross the border at legal border crossing places?
Why would they not just fly to Mexico & walk across the US border into American just like all the illegals from Mexico do?
The terrorist that carried out 911 all had passports or permission to be in the US.
Does this in itself not prove that passports or border crossing permits do not have the power to stop or prevent terrorism against the US?
If they had been searched at the border what would having a box knife in their possession mean?
I use box knives every day in my business & I also always take one camping with me to cut things in camp & open boxes & things like that. Will I be denied access to the US on my return trip if I have a box knife with me?
The border crossing red tape sucks & is nothing more than a total waste of time & effort on the part of the US Government.
They got it through just so a bunch of people could make some more money at citizen expense printing all the forms, taking the photos & the Post Office gets $25.00. The Post Office is going in the hole by 200 Billion Dollars so this was an opportunity for them to take in some cash which is nothing more than another hidden tax on American Citizens who are already taxed to the hilt.
I am not a Canadian but if I was I would tell my government to have these stupid border restrictions lifted for both Canadian Citizens & American Citizens & open the border backup for mutual trade. Many Canadians live in Florida in the winter months. I would tell my government to cut off all Americans coming into Canada period if the US Government refuses to cooperate.
This whole affair has put such a sour taste in my mouth I really do not want to go up to camp & fish anymore as all the hassle & red tape & cost has taken all the fun & excitement out of it & for what?
Just so some special interest can make money off it?
People are fed up with all these jackasses in the congress & senate & hopefully the younger generation will be smart enough to vote all of them out of office & banish them from further participation as elected officials.
Americans going back & forth across the Canadian Border never were a threat to US Security & never will be so why did all this nonsense come about? They are supposed to stop terrorist from coming & going & not US Citizens.
If I were the Canadian Government I would be more worried about Americans than terrorist. Since 911 150,000 Americans have been brutally murdered & 500,000 more shot & all of this was done by Americans in America on American soil as compared to the innocent 4,000 lives lost through 911 & The Middle East Wars. What this means Americans are more of a threat than terrorist from the Middle East Or Africa.
With that in mind I do not see how the Canadian Government would want anyone from America to come into their country for fear that they might rob & kill someone & based on the eveidence at hand it would seem an American would be ten times more likely to commit crimes up there against Canadian Society.
Get the point?
If I want to take my grandson & son on a fishing trip with me to The Georgian Bay this summer the total cost will be $400.00 for the three of us & I am retired & now on limited income & I am also a US Navy Veteran that was finger printed & put in all the US Government Computers when I was 18 years old & I also have a Veterans Hospital Card with my picture on it. I have an Ohio drivers license which also proves who I am. What good is all of these positive IDS? I have credit cards & all that also & license plates on my vehicle, boats & canoes & boat trailer. If you have a business in Canada I do not think you will need to worry about me using my card there anymore. The interest rate is just to high & the cost to go is prohibitive with all of this ridiculous border crossing red tape & hassle.
Two of my friends recently drove up to Detroit & went across the bridge into Canada & they were made to turn around & leave as they had no broder crossing pass or passport. They wanted to spend the day in Canada & buy a few things & spend some money. They told me they would never go up there ever again & they went hunting in Canada for many years every year & hired guides & all that. Both of these men were retired & over 70.
All because of some dumbass politicians Canadians are losing money & commerce.
Remember only the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
Someone needs to come forward & start raising hell about all of this nonsense & get these stupid border restrictions lifted or they can pretty much forget about low & middle income Americans visiting Canada anymore for annual fishing & hunting trips.
I just put in my two cents but I am not a Canadian & can not influence government officials up there.
Down here unless you are a celebrity or quite wealthy politicans could care less about you or what you think & could also care less about your rights.
That is one of the reasons America is in such bad shape now.
I was doing a Google Blog Search & came across this article about a 53 pound 2 oz. pike.
The angler supposedly caught a smaller pike & the huge pike hit the smaller pike as it was being reeled in & he landed both of them.
Look at the size of this fish!
*The picture of the gentleman holding the pike is not fake! My husband Jim Shedden took this picture aproximately five years ago at the mouth of the French River on the Georgian Bay side. The pike was 53 pounds 2 ozs. The name of the fellow holding the pike is Bob Taylor.
This picture has somehow circulated the internet time and time again, however, I have the negative in my basement !!! The picture of the pike with the other fish in its mouth, is not his picture. This picture has been added in circulation.
I have no idea what is going on here or whether it is a record or not or whether it was caught ht in Georgian Bay or not or whether it is actually a Swedish pike but pictures do not lie & this is one huge pike.
This big largemouth bass hole is way back in Sand Bay & can be full of largemouth & smallmouth bass at times that readily take surface lures. We have taken a lot of really big largemouth in this area so fish it throughly & especially way bay at the end where the creek runs into it as big largemouth sometimes hold in this warm shallow water. Also know that a nine pound smallmouth was caught in Sand Bay on a live crayfish fished 35 foot deep by the Windmill Cottage. It was taken two days before bass season opened & had to be released.
